Great Article on the GTA Series

by aakar on March 20, 2008

If you have some time to spare and you are a Grand Theft Auto fan, I urge you to read the following two-part article:

Part 1: Grand Theft Auto: The Inside Story

Part 2: The Making of Grand Theft Auto IV

While there aren’t any new surprises in part 2 in respect to the game, it’s still a great read and helps to reinforce the idea that this very well may be the game of the year. Part 1 is a great look at the first few games in the series and how the Rockstar team created a brand new genre of games as well as the creative process behind them:

“I think what was very special about the GTA III development process – and it’s something we still cling on to – was the fact that ideas would come into the game from anywhere and everywhere in the company; it was the son of so many great minds and opinions and attitudes and energies, and everybody was just throwing it in the pot. It’s an example that’s been taken out of context in the past, but from a pure game-mechanic point of view, the fact that you could go with a hooker and then go and whack her and take your money back, just the game mechanics of that – looking at it completely isolated from the fact that it involves a hooker – were brilliant, I thought. And that was the contribution of just this one guy – that was his bit.”

The article also makes a point to discuss the fact that the main character in GTA 3 never spoke:

“That was one of those things where I think I only remember noticing kind of late on, like: ‘Fuck – he doesn’t speak’. And I’ve never said that to anyone before – I’m being honest here. But I remember thinking, well, it kind of works – who cares?”

If you can’t get enough of the GTA franchise or are highly excited about number four, I’d recommend finding some time to read this article.

“At most companies, the red-faced, tyrannical boss is an outdated archetype, a caricature from the life of Dagwood. Not at Apple. Whereas the rest of the tech industry may motivate employees with carrots, Jobs is known as an inveterate stick man. Even the most favored employee could find themselves on the receiving end of a tirade. Insiders have a term for it: the “hero-shithead roller coaster.” Says Edward Eigerman, a former Apple engineer, “More than anywhere else I’ve worked before or since, there’s a lot of concern about being fired.””

Here’s To You Mr. Cab Driver Man

by aakar on March 12, 2008

Cab drivers in general are an interesting group of the general population.  If your new to the city your hope is that they aren’t screwing you or if you know the city you hope they adhere to the fastest possible route, while driving at the very least 15 mph over the speed limit.  Most of them tend to not be very social and when they do speak, it’s usually them talking on their cell-phone.  In general though they are just trying to make sure they get you to where you are going and they get paid.  Most often or not due to varying circumstances *cough* bars *cough* I may not have enough cash in my wallet to pay for the entire trip, at times like these I usually ask the cab driver to pull-over at a ATM so I can withdraw the necessary funds to pay for the transportation.  More often or not you’ll get a dirty look but they’ll end up pulling over because they want their money.  Last night though I bared witness to something that I’ve never seen before, a cab driver not caring about the difference.  Mind you it was only 2 dollars or so, but still.  I took a cab from Kenmore to Oak Square, which cost me about 13 and change, and prior to getting dropped off asked him to stop at one of the ATMs, because I only had $11.00 on me.  The cab driver said “No need to stop, just give me what you have”.

I was completely baffled to say the least.  That was a first for me.

GTA IV Hands on Preview

GTA IV Hands on Preview:

After two hours of intensive hands-on, the question is no longer “does GTA IV re-write the urban crime genre?” but, “does it blow away San Andreas?” The answer clear and simple – yes it does.

Great preview of what could very well possibly be the game of the year.

“Sources have been telling me that doormen at several clubs are clearing $8,000 to $10,000 a night before they share tips. So much cash is pouring in that some doormen are making $400,000 to $500,000 a year, several nightclub executives told me.”
