Whose Country? Oh That’s Right It’s Our Country Thanks For Reminding Me JCM

I tend to watch an inordinate amount of television. Mostly sports and primetime shows, but just to put it bluntly it’s a lot of television. In such a situation you are always guaranteed to see the same commercials over and over again or at least the same advertising campaign over and over again. Obviously causing you further disdain for the company and anything else related to the commercial i.e. actors, music, artists. Since last football season Chevy’s latest ad campaign has reached the top of my “advertisement campaigns I hate list”. It’s fallen into the “Smooth” radio play category. For those of you unaware, the most overplayed song if not in history but at least in the last decade or two was Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas’s song “Smooth”. I still get that nails on a chalkboard shiver when I hear that song on the radio. And seriously it’s still played on the radio. At any rate Chevy’s “Our Country” ad campaign, which is tailored around showing various different commercials accompanied by John Cougar Mellencamp’s song “Our Country”, has to be the worst recent ad campaign to date. The song has reached a monumental height of annoyance. The roommates and I have to literally change the channel or run out of the room so we don’t get angry when said song comes on TV. Well it seems the hatred is reaching to all levels of the media too as Peter King in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback article points out:

l. My hope for the New Year is a pretty simple: that John Cougar Mellencamp writes a new song for Chevy

Too bad it took so long, but I’m hoping some Chevy marketing executive gets the memo that this campaign needs to end immediately. Nothing against John Cougar, but let’s hope Chevy tries to change it up.
